When Ghafur first opened his results slip, he got the greatest surprise of his life. His eyes zoomed down the row of subjects printed on the left side of the paper, and he used his index finger to go over the word “Chinese”. His eyes quickly darted across horizontally and he saw ‘A’. “WOW A, is this real?” Ghafur couldn’t contain his excitement and shock, he took one more look at the paper to confirm this piece of good news.
Ghafur is a Malay boy who took Chinese as mother tongue and typically scores a borderline pass for Chinese ever since his upper Primary years. At the start of Primary 6, he had low expectations of his Chinese results as he felt that everyone had an edge over him because he is from a non-Chinese speaking family.
